Most of us have been injured or had a debilitating illness at least once in our life. And with each trauma, your body automatically tightens and moves carefully to avoid further pain. What you may not know is that these new ways of moving stay ‘turned on’ even after healing has occurred. Over time, these new habits increase your likelihood of more injury and pain.
The Feldenkrais Method® is for people wanting to reconnect with themselves in order to reduce pain and find greater ease of movement. By learning how your pelvis, ribs, shoulder, neck and head all relate to each other, you will “build yourself a better body”— one that is stronger, more flexible and can move in balanced, more capable ways. You will have fewer injuries and recover faster and more fully.
The Feldenkrais Method® is named after its founder, Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais (1904–1984), an internationally recognized physicist, engineer and master of Judo. Dr. Feldenkrais developed a unique and gentle way of retraining the brain and body to make smooth efficient movement. Dr. Feldenkrais authored several books whose far-reaching discoveries helped to revolutionize scientific knowledge regarding the relationship between how we move and how we think, feel, sense, and learn.
With 1-to-1 sessions you lie or sit fully clothed on a low table or chair while the practitioner gently moves or holds your body in different ways. You may be asked to make small, specific movements to help your brain become aware of your unconscious muscle tension created by old injuries and repetitive habits that have made your movements inefficient and painful. These are the patterns we need to change. In a very real sense, the practitioner ‘draws the dots’ involved in healthy movement patterns and your brain automatically ‘connects the dots’ to correct faulty movements that have been the source of your pain. The almost miraculous result is smoother, more fluid movement that is easy and comfortable.
