Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education

Give Your Brain a "Face Lift"

  • Move and think like you're 10 years younger
  • Improve your quality of life to live with ease and comfort
  • Regain confident movement to reduce falls
  • Achieve excellence with your favorite sport or art
  • Improve posture and self-image

You can – and more! And it's easy. The Feldenkrais Method® of somatic education enhances your ability to learn new patterns of moving, feeling, and thinking. It improves communication between the movement center of the brain and the body.

Well organized movement uses the right muscles in the right order at the right time with the right amount of effort. Therefore, improvement in the way you create movement allows better range of motion, ease and comfort so your pain disappears!

Most of us have been injured or had a debilitating illness at least once in our life. And with each trauma, the body automatically tightens to adopt new ways of moving carefully to avoid further pain. What you may not know is that these new ways of moving stay 'turned on' even after healing has occurred! And these new habits add up over time to increase your likelihood of new injury and continued pain.

The Feldenkrais Method® is for people wanting to reconnect with themselves in order to reduce pain and find greater ease of movement. By learning how your pelvis, ribs, shoulder, neck and head all relate to each other, you will "build yourself a better body"— one that is stronger, more flexible and can move in balanced, more capable ways. You will have fewer injuries and recover faster and more fully.

The Feldenkrais Method® is named after its founder, Dr. Moshé Feldenkrais (1904–1984), an internationally recognized physicist, engineer and master of Judo. Dr. Feldenkrais developed a unique and gentle way of retraining the brain and body so that movements become smooth and efficient. Dr. Feldenkrais is the author of several books whose fundamental and far-reaching discoveries have helped to revolutionize scientific knowledge regarding the relationship between how we move and how we think, feel, sense, and learn.

With 1-to-1 sessions you lie or sit fully clothed on a low table or chair while the practitioner gently moves or holds your body in different ways. You may be asked to make small, specific movements to help give your brain new information to become aware of your unconscious tension in muscles created by old injuries and repetitive habits that have made your movements inefficient and painful. These are the patterns we need to change. In a very real sense, the practitioner 'draws the dots' involved in healthy movement patterns and your brain automatically 'connects the dots' to correct faulty movements that have been the source of your pain. The almost miraculous result is smoother, more fluid movement that is easy and comfortable.

With group sessions, called Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) lessons, you are verbally guided through a sequence of gentle brain-awakening movements. Classes may take place on the floor on mats like in yoga, tai chi, Pilates, etc., on a chair or while standing. Call us to see what classes are currently available.
